SADC Troika Convenes Extra-Ordinary Meeting on Mozambique

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation is set to hold an extraordinary meeting today, January 5, 2025, to address the post-election political and security situation in the Republic of Mozambique.

The meeting will be chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the Republic of Tanzania.

Mozambique has experienced protests and threats to its security following the October 9 election, which was won by Daniel Chapo of the ruling party, FRELIMO.

The opposition has resorted to violence, alleging election irregularities. The resulting impasse has created economic challenges for both Mozambique and the region, as the country’s ports are crucial for the movement of goods.

SADC is eager to see Mozambique return to normalcy and has urged all parties to cease hostilities and engage in dialogue as a path to resolving the crisis.

The SADC Chairperson, President ED Mnangagwa is on record calling the parties to dialogue.

The latest meeting of the troika is one of the initiatives by the regional bloc to help Mozambique get back on its feet.
