The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has raised alarm over a shocking wave of violent deaths recorded during the festive season, with 47 murder cases reported across the country between December 20 and December 26, 2024.
The alarming surge has been linked to disputes arising from beer-drinking sprees, family feuds, sporting activities, and even disagreements over relationships.
In one harrowing incident on Christmas Day in Mwenezi, Mastard Chauke (22) fatally struck an innocent bystander, Ostern Mangaru (29), with a stone intended for someone else during a beer-drinking altercation. The victim died on the spot, leaving the community in shock.
On the same day in Shurugwi, a misunderstanding over a missing pool token turned deadly when Learnmore Mudzengi (36) stabbed his younger brother, Sydney Mudzengi (21), with a Columbian knife. The suspect fled but was later apprehended by police.
Equally disturbing was the tragic case in Kuwadzana 7, Harare, where Nihipalakar Muyaya (22) allegedly assaulted his grandmother, Agnes Duri (70), for failing to give him a Christmas present. The elderly woman was found lifeless with blood oozing from her mouth and ears. Muyaya has since been arrested.
Meanwhile, in Makonde, police are investigating the mysterious death of Polite Nyauro (23), whose lifeless body was found at Chipfuvamiti Primary School after he went missing during a beer-drinking binge.
The ZRP has attributed the spike in violence to the festive season’s heightened social interactions and the tendency to settle disputes with violence. They have urged the public to embrace peaceful conflict resolution methods and called on families, churches, and traditional leaders to play an active role in fostering a culture of respect for human life.
In a stern statement, ZRP Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized the importance of community engagement in promoting law-abiding behavior.
“The sanctity of human life must be upheld at all times. The Police will continue engaging communities to ensure this culture is fostered,” he said.
As investigations continue, the ZRP has assured citizens of their commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice while urging the public to report any suspicious activities promptly.
The festive season, meant to be a time of joy and unity, has instead left a trail of heartbreak and loss, prompting a nationwide call for peace and restraint.
