SADC Chairman Acknowledges Mozambique Election Results

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has officially recognized the Constitutional Council ruling in Mozambique that confirmed the FRELIMO Party’s victory in the October 9, 2024, elections.

In a statement issued by SADC Chairman, Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, the bloc emphasized that the court’s decision marked the conclusion of all lawful processes concerning the election results. Dr. Mnangagwa called on all parties involved to respect the ruling, noting that it provided a constitutional pathway toward peace, stability, and normalcy for Mozambique.

“The ruling by that country’s top electoral court, which upheld FRELIMO Party’s victory, completes and thus exhausts all lawful processes on determining election results,” read part of the statement.

Dr. Mnangagwa also reaffirmed SADC’s readiness to support Mozambique in strengthening its democratic processes and urged the international community to respect the sovereign will of Mozambicans.

“SADC stands ready to assist the incoming Government and People of Mozambique in consolidating their electoral democracy on the basis of the court decision, which should be held sacrosanct by all,” he said.

The statement further urged all stakeholders to focus on promoting peace, law, and order in the country.

Mozambique’s election ruling follows a year marked by numerous elections across the SADC region, a development Dr. Mnangagwa described as evidence of democracy flourishing in southern Africa.
