In a disturbing occurrence, four Rhinos have died at Lake Chivero Recreational Park after drinking contaminated water.

The Rhinos drank the water contaminated with cyanobacteria.
Other animals succumbed to the contamination. Three zebras, four wildebeests, four fish eagles and goats and cattles from nearby farms died as well.
Zimparks has implemented measures to deter animals from drinking the water in the lake. Artificial water points and salt blocks have been installed around the park.
Despite these initiatives being put in place, the animals have continued drinking from the water presenting a challenging scenario.
Zimparks called stakeholders such as the government, the local community and conservationists to come on board for better environmental practices to be implemented and understand the effect of pollution on the ecosystem.
Zimparks implored stakeholders to intervene as Zimbabwe is set to host the RAMSAR Convention on wetlands CoP15 next July from 23–31, 2025 in Victoria Falls,.
The event will focus on key topics such as: Protecting freshwater sources, Biodiversity protection, and Sustainable and wise use of wetlands.
Lake Chivero is listed as one of the seven RAMSAR sites in Zimbabwe.
Concerted efforts are required to conserve wildlife.
