The inaugural UN Tourism Africa & Americas Summit in the Dominican Republic marked a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe, emphasizing the vital role tourism plays in both its economy and cultural identity.

Focused on sustainable tourism development, the summit provided a platform to explore strategies for strengthening international partnerships while safeguarding Zimbabwe’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Tourism is a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy, contributing 4.25 percent of GDP and 1.56 percent of total employment, while also promoting local businesses. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and deep cultural heritage, the country attracts visitors from across the globe. At the summit, Zimbabwe reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable practices that not only protect its resources but also empower local communities and drive economic growth.

A central theme from the discussions was the potential of tourism as a tool for empowerment, aligning with Zimbabwe’s objectives of community engagement and sustainable development. Collaborative strategies emerged as critical for enhancing economic ties and cultural exchanges between Africa and the Americas. This perspective, widely embraced by the delegates, reinforced tourism’s ability to bridge divides, foster mutual understanding, and celebrate cultural diversity.

Moreover, the summit underscored the importance of investing in infrastructure and technology to elevate Zimbabwe’s tourism offerings in a competitive and rapidly evolving global market. This commitment to driving forward positive change serves as a rallying call for stakeholders, both within Zimbabwe and internationally, inspiring collective efforts toward a vibrant and sustainable future for the tourism sector.
