In a powerful State of the Nation Address delivered at the New Parliament in Mt Hampden, Harare, President Emmerson Mnangagwa reaffirmed the Zanu PF government’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises. Despite the significant challenges posed by illegal economic sanctions, the President asserted that Zimbabwe is making noteworthy progress across various sectors. He underscored the government’s philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind,” which aims to ensure inclusive transformation and shared prosperity for all Zimbabweans.
A key highlight of the address was the impressive growth of Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, driven by initiatives from the Second Republic. The National Enhanced Agricultural Productivity Scheme has emerged as a pivotal program, significantly boosting wheat production and positioning Zimbabwe toward self-sufficiency in staple food production—a major milestone given the country’s historical struggles with food security. President Mnangagwa announced a projected record-breaking harvest of 600,000 tonnes for the 2024 winter wheat crop, reflecting the government’s commitment to empowering smallholder farmers through programs like the Presidential Input Scheme, which has enhanced food security and improved rural livelihoods.
Infrastructure development was another focal point of the President’s speech. The government has made considerable strides in rehabilitating major roads, including the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu Highway, which has improved connectivity and facilitated trade. In addition, significant investments in energy generation, such as the expansion of the Kariba South Power Station and various renewable energy projects, have bolstered power supply and mitigated outages, further enabling economic growth.
The government’s efforts to promote industrialization and economic growth are also yielding positive results. The Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) has streamlined investment processes, attracting foreign direct investment across key sectors including mining, manufacturing, and tourism. Furthermore, the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Development Policy is fostering entrepreneurship, creating jobs, and invigorating local economies.
In the health sector, notable advancements have been made to enhance access to quality healthcare. The government’s emphasis on primary healthcare has led to the construction and upgrading of clinics and hospitals nationwide. Additionally, the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme aims to provide universal health coverage, ensuring that healthcare is more affordable and accessible for all Zimbabweans.
Education has not been overlooked, with the government focusing on expanding access and improving quality. A recent curriculum review for the primary and secondary sectors has been transformative, while the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) program has significantly increased enrolment rates, particularly for vulnerable children. Investments in infrastructure development, teacher training, and curriculum reform are further enriching the learning environment, equipping students to meet the challenges of the 21st-century economy.
As President Mnangagwa concluded his address, he reiterated the Zanu PF government’s dedication to uplifting the nation and ensuring that every citizen benefits from the country’s growth and development.
