POTRAZ to License Starlink Kit Resellers in Zimbabwe

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) is set to license resellers of Starlink kits, following the company’s official approval to operate in the country.

Starlink, owned by SpaceX under American billionaire Elon Musk, received two licences on September 6, 2024: a Telecommunications Licence for Network Services and an Internet Service Provider (National) Licence. The company is now poised to roll out satellite internet services in Zimbabwe.

After completing the licensing process, POTRAZ issued a statement requiring resellers or agents of Starlink kits to be approved by the regulator.

“It is a condition of the Starlink Licences that such agencies, dealers, and ISPs shall be subject to clearance by POTRAZ. This condition applies to both existing and prospective ISPs and network operators,” read the statement by Dr. G.K. Machengete, POTRAZ Director General.

Companies and individuals who defy this directive will face legal consequences.

The licensing of Starlink marks a significant step towards transforming internet connectivity in Zimbabwe, offering an alternative to traditional broadband services. With its high-speed and reliable satellite internet, Starlink is expected to provide a much-needed solution, especially in areas with limited internet infrastructure.
