President Mnangagwa to Join African Leaders at FOCAC Summit in China

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to join other African leaders at the upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit in Beijing, scheduled from September 4 to 6, 2024. The summit, themed “Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future,” aims to strengthen China-Africa relations, aligning with China’s broader geopolitical ambitions.

FOCAC, established in 2000, is a vital multilateral platform that promotes economic, political, and social cooperation between China and Africa. All 54 African nations, alongside the African Union Commission, are members, ensuring that FOCAC’s initiatives align with the African Union’s agenda.

This year’s summit holds particular significance for Zimbabwe as it seeks to strengthen its ties with BRICS, a group that shares overlapping objectives with FOCAC. Both platforms aim to challenge the global order dominated by Western countries and promote economic development and I’m. Zimbabwe’s participation underscores its commitment to engagement and re-engagement policies, leveraging China’s support during the peak of Western-imposed sanctions.

As more African nations express interest in joining BRICS, FOCAC’s influence continues to grow, offering Zimbabwe and the broader continent opportunities for infrastructure development, industrialization, and economic expansion. The summit provides a strategic platform for Zimbabwe to advance its interests and strengthen its global partnerships.
