ZIFA Mourns Fan Who Died at National Sports Stadium, Pledges Safety Review

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has mourned the death of a football fan following an incident at the National Sports Stadium during Zimbabwe’s match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, 28 September 2026.

In a statement released on 30 September, ZIFA said it was deeply saddened by the incident which occurred at Gate 2 and also left other fans injured.

“On behalf of the Executive Committee, players, technical staff and the entire football family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends. We also wish all injured fans a full and speedy recovery,” the association said.

ZIFA said it is working closely with all stakeholders and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and address safety concerns at the stadium.

The association said it will support due process to ensure justice is served, while reviewing matchday operations with relevant authorities and stadium stakeholders to identify shortcomings and strengthen safety measures for spectators.

“The safety and wellbeing of everyone attending football matches remains a priority,” ZIFA said.

The association said its thoughts remain with the bereaved family, the injured and everyone affected by the incident.
