Jumbo Giants hold City, target Banket scalp

SPORTS REPORTER

Jumbo Giants say they are satisfied with the draw at home to MCM Estates-Northern Region Soccer League title favourites Harare City, a result that ended a two-match losing run for the Mazowe-based side.

Having fallen by identical 1-0 scorelines at home to Highrange and away to Shamva Mine in the previous two matches, Jumbo Giants put on a performance full of energy and endeavour against title favourites Harare City in a rare Tuesday match. But a lack of cutting edge in front of goal meant Jumbo Giants had to settle for a draw at home.

Assistant coach Richard Chunga commended his players for their spirited performance and said the draw was a fair result.

“It was a tough game against a really good team. We were also coming from two losses in a row and to draw against the log leaders, it’s a point gained and we’ll take it,” said Chunga.

Looking ahead to the next match against Banket United, Chunga said the target is to collect maximum points so that they stay in touch with the leading teams

“The plan is to go there (Banket) and get three points because remember, we want to try and fight for the championship. All the teams in the the top 10 are in it (title race), so why not go and fight to get the three points in Banket,” said Chunga.

With 20 games having been played so far, Jumbo Giants are in tenth position with 27 points, 11 behind new log leaders Black Rhinos.
