BAZ Calls For Community Radio Applications As Government Pushes For Devolution

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has invited applications for community radio broadcasting licences in selected areas, marking a significant step towards promoting decentralization and local development.

The move is part of the government’s efforts to ensure that no community is left behind in accessing information and staying up-to-date with national developments. The licences will be issued to operate in previously marginalized communities, including Sanyati, Guruve, Mwenezi, and 17 other areas.

The application fee has been set at US$400, while the annual basic licence fee is US$800. The licence period is ten years, with the option to renew. This initiative is in line with the government’s devolution agenda, which aims to promote democratic participation, local development, and equitable resource sharing.

The geographical distribution of the licences caters to the country’s provinces, aligning with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) goals of amplifying devolution and decentralization. By empowering provincial and local governments, the government hopes to drive local development and promote economic growth.

The licencing of community radio stations is a welcome development, expected to enhance access to information and promote local participation in national development. The deadline for submission of applications is 90 days from the date of notice publication.

This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to freeing the airwaves and promoting media diversity, following the licencing of numerous radio stations and independent commercial television stations under President ED Mnangagwa’s leadership.
