The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is shifting to a four-year cycle from 2028, as confirmed by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe.
This change aims to boost the tournament’s prestige, commercial value, and align with the global football calendar.
The decision was made to ease the pressure on players and clubs, as the previous biennial format often conflicted with European league schedules. The 2027 edition in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will still go ahead, followed by the 2028 edition, and then the new cycle kicks in.
To fill the gap, CAF plans to launch an annual African Nations League from 2029, inspired by Europe’s format. The winners of this year’s tournament will take home US$10 million, up from US$7 million previously.
