Zimbabwe is set to introduce a modern, structured parole and rehabilitation system next year, aimed at decongesting prison facilities and promoting humane prison integration into society.
Vice President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga announced this initiative at the inaugural African Parole Conference in Harare, highlighting the government’s commitment to comprehensive correctional reform.
The new parole system will be overseen by a State Parole Board and is designed to promote rehabilitation, successful reintegration, and enhanced public safety. This move is part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to modernize its prison system, including the construction of new facilities and incorporation of advanced digital technologies.
The parole system will allow prisoners to be released conditionally before completing their sentences, with considerations including meritorious conduct, self-discipline, and responsibility.
Prisoners will be allowed to serve the remainder of their sentences in communities they live under supervision.
This initiative is expected to reduce overcrowding, support offender rehabilitation, and contribute to safer communities.
