Chris Hughton Among 300 Eyeing Warriors Job

The race to lead Zimbabwe’s senior national football team has intensified, with former Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City manager Chris Hughton emerging among over 300 applicants vying for the Warriors’ head coach position.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed the remarkable response after the closure of the online application portal on Thursday, describing it as a reflection of growing international interest in Zimbabwean football. The association is expected to announce the successful candidate next week as preparations accelerate for the upcoming FIFA international window.

Hughton, 66, commands respect across world football. With an illustrious career managing in the English Premier League, including Tottenham, Newcastle United, and Norwich City and a recent stint with Ghana’s Black Stars, his application underscores Zimbabwe’s increasing appeal as a competitive football destination.

The next coach faces immediate challenges, with the Warriors set to play Algeria and Qatar in friendly matches next month. Zimbabwe will first take on Algeria in Saudi Arabia on November 13 before meeting Qatar four days later. Both matches are crucial tune-ups ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for December.

ZIFA officials have hailed the high volume of applications as proof that global coaches recognise Zimbabwe’s football potential and the steps being taken to rebuild credibility through structured, transparent processes. The association’s commitment to professional recruitment marks a new chapter for the Warriors, who are eager to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite.

For local fans, the news of Hughton’s interest injects excitement and hope. His vast experience could bring tactical discipline, international exposure, and a winning mentality to a team brimming with young talent. But with over 300 hopefuls in contention, the final decision will hinge on more than reputation, it will rest on who best fits the vision of restoring Zimbabwe’s football glory.
