ZIFA fires Warriors coach, Michael Nees

The Zimbabwe Football Association has fired embattled men’s senior footballer, the Warriors coach, Michael Nees, following a string of disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The football mother body’s executive committee shut the door on the coach with immediate effect.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) seeks to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect,” read the statement released by ZIFA.

ZIFA thanked Michael Nees for his contribution to Zimbabwean football and committed to managing the transition in an urgent manner in the interest of football.

Since joining the Warriors as coach in July 2024, Michael Nees’ registered two wins in sixteen matches, a poor and disheartening showing.

Wins have not been forthcoming, resulting in the Warriors failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. His World Cup campaign was winless.

The only positive takeaway is the qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by the team. Otherwise, his overall performance was below par.

ZIFA is urged to urgently appoint his successor in time for the TotalEnergies AFCON tournament which will take place from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026 in Morocco.
