Silver Glory: ZEGU Rhinos Shine on Continental Stage, Inspire Nation

The ZEGU Rhinos, representing Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University, returned home to thunderous celebration after claiming a silver medal at the 2025 Africa University Rugby 7s Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. Their journey through the continental tournament was marked by grit, skill, and resilience, narrowly falling 17–14 to hosts Jomo Kenyatta University in a final that had rugby fans across the continent holding their breathing.

Even before setting foot on Kenyan soil, the Rhinos had proven their dominance at home, winning the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union Rugby Cup with an emphatic 64–7 victory over Harare Polytechnic College. This achievement gave them not only confidence but also the right to represent Zimbabwe among Africa’s best universities. In Nairobi, the competition was fierce, with 14 universities from across the continent showcasing exceptional talent. Yet, the Rhinos moved through the pool stages with determination, their teamwork, discipline, and tactical brilliance shining through every match.

Upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, the team was met with a spectacle that spoke volumes about national pride. Students, family, friends, and well-wishers erupted in song, dance, and ululations, turning the airport into a sea of celebration. The joyous shouts and rhythmic movements carried a message of admiration and gratitude, honoring the young athletes who had carried Zimbabwe’s flag on an international stage. It was a moment that reminded everyone watching that sports achievements are not just victories on the field, but triumphs of spirit, resilience, and community support.

ZEGU officials, brimming with pride, reflected on the significance of the team’s performance. Coaches emphasized the players’ determination and unity, highlighting how the Rhinos overcame tough competition and exceeded expectations at their first major international outing. The tournament also served as a learning experience, offering the team insight into the standard of African university rugby and paving the way for even greater achievements. Looking ahead, the team’s eyes are set on qualifying for the FISU Games, an opportunity to compete globally and showcase Zimbabwean talent on an even larger stage.

The ZEGU Rhinos’ silver medal is a testament not only to their athletic ability but also to their character, perseverance, and the unwavering support of their university and country. As they prepare for future competitions, the jubilant reception at the airport will remain etched in memory, a vivid reminder of how hard work, courage, and unity can inspire a nation and elevate young athletes to the continental spotlight.
