High Court Overturns Chillmaster’s Lenient Driving Ruling

ZIM-dancehall artist Kudakwashe Gift Hombarume, known as Chillmaster, has been slapped with a nine-month driving ban after the High Court ordered a review of his earlier sentence.

Initially, Mbare Magistrate Tatenda Mukurunge had fined Chillmaster US$200 for driving without a licence and sentenced him to 210 hours of community service for culpable homicide.

The sentence sparked widespread debate, leading the High Court to intervene. Judge President Justice Mary Zimba-Dube ruled that the earlier judgment was not in the interest of justice and directed Magistrate Mukurunge to impose a tougher sanction.

The decision underscores the judiciary’s stance on upholding accountability in road traffic offences involving loss of life.
