President Mnangagwa presides over burial of national hero, Dr Sydney Gata

The burial of national hero, the late Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings, Dr. Sydney Gata, is set for today, with His Excellency President ED Mnangagwa expected to preside over the proceedings. Thousands are anticipated to pay their last respects to the respected power and infrastructure development guru.

Dr. Gata, who passed away at the age of 79 after a short illness last Thursday, was declared a national hero by His Excellency President ED Mnangagwa in recognition of his contributions before and after independence.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs has called on the nation to gather at the National Heroes Acre to bid farewell to Dr. Gata.

“Following the conferment of national hero status on the late Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings by His Excellency, the President, Cde Dr. ED Mnangagwa, the nation is advised that his burial will be on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, will preside over this burial.”

Mourners have been advised to be at the usual pick-up points early in the morning.
