Zimbabwe-China Relations Deepen as Speaker Mudenda Meets Key Chinese Leaders, Boosting Parliamentary and Economic Links

The recent visit by Honorable Advocate J.F.N Mudenda, Speaker of the Zimbabwean Parliament, to China has significantly deepened the longstanding bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and the People’s Republic of China. During a landmark meeting with His Excellency Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Speaker Mudenda secured a renewed commitment to expanding socio-economic cooperation based on the “five-star ironclad” partnership framework championed by Presidents Mnangagwa and Xi Jinping. This high-level dialogue reaffirmed over four decades of diplomatic solidarity, rooted in mutual respect and Zimbabwe’s liberation history, with H.E. Wang personally expressing deep knowledge of Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence.

Among the key achievements was the agreement to establish a Zimbabwe-China Parliamentary Friendship Association, a platform that promises to enhance legislative cooperation, facilitate knowledge sharing, and strengthen people-to-people ties. This initiative complements existing executive partnerships and reflects the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering bilateral development. Speaker Mudenda extended a formal invitation to H.E. Wang Huning to visit Zimbabwe, underlining the importance of reciprocal engagement.

The visit also highlighted China’s crucial role in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure and energy sectors. China’s grant-funded construction of Zimbabwe’s New Parliament Building stands as a symbol of the enduring partnership. Investments in energy projects such as the refurbishment of the Kariba South hydropower plant and the expansion of Hwange Thermal Power Station units 7 and 8 illustrate China’s tangible contribution to addressing Zimbabwe’s energy needs. Nonetheless, Speaker Mudenda openly acknowledged ongoing challenges in power generation and called for greater Chinese investment in renewable energy to support Zimbabwe’s green industrialization goals under the Second Republic’s development agenda.

A key moment during the visit was the tour of China Railway International Group (CRIG) facilities, providing the Zimbabwean delegation with exposure to advanced railway technologies and international infrastructure projects. With CRIG’s expertise in high-speed rail and heavy-haul networks, plans to modernize Zimbabwe’s railway system, especially to support mining and industrial hubs like the Midlands region and the Dinson Iron and Steel Plant near Mvuma, are being explored. The delegation also discussed the challenges posed by differing railway gauges across Africa, with CRIG committing to future efforts toward regional standardization.

Beyond economic and infrastructure matters, the visit reinforced China’s political support for Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and its opposition to illegal Western sanctions. Both sides condemned protectionist trade policies and emphasized the importance of equitable, rules-based international trade. Speaker Mudenda expressed Zimbabwe’s aspirations to join BRICS and welcomed China’s Belt and Road Initiative as a key driver for regional integration and economic growth.

Social development was another highlight, with H.E. Wang sharing insights into China’s successful poverty alleviation programs that lifted millions out of extreme poverty within a decade. The CPPCC’s role in shaping these policies was of particular interest to the Zimbabwean delegation, who plan to study similar models in China’s Gansu Province to inform Zimbabwe’s Rural Industrialization Development Programme. This aligns closely with Zimbabwe’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on poverty eradication.

In sum, Speaker Mudenda’s visit to China was a strategic engagement that went beyond ceremonial diplomacy, offering practical pathways to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, energy, economic diversification, and social development. The establishment of parliamentary links alongside executive collaboration promises a comprehensive approach to governance and development, embodying the spirit of the “five-star ironclad” friendship between Zimbabwe and China. As Zimbabwe pursues its industrialization and poverty eradication objectives, this reinforced partnership with China provides both historical roots and forward-looking opportunities for sustainable growth.
