ZESA Announces Load Shedding as Hwange Repairs Underway, First Unit Expected Back by Tuesday

HARARE – ZESA Holdings has announced increased load shedding across all customer groups following a technical fault at Hwange Power Station, which has significantly reduced the country’s electricity generation capacity.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 4, 2025, the power utility said engineers from the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) are working diligently to restore full operations, with the first unit from Hwange’s Stage 1 and 2 expected to return to service by the end of Tuesday, May 6.

“ZESA Holdings would like to advise its valued stakeholders of a technical fault that occurred at Hwange Power Station, resulting in the reduction of available power supplies.

This unforeseen incident has necessitated increased load shedding across all customer groups.” the statement read.

Hwange Power Station is the country’s largest thermal plant and a critical component of Zimbabwe’s national grid. The disruption has worsened the power supply situation, impacting homes, industry, and essential services.

ZESA apologized for the inconvenience and appealed for public patience as ZPC intensifies repair efforts, aiming to stabilize supply before the end of the week.
