Zimbabwe Strengthens Global Parliamentary Influence at 150th IPU Assembly

Proceedings at the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly officially commenced on Friday in Uzbekistan, with Zimbabwe marking a significant milestone through the election of Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, to chair a newly established committee under the Africa Geopolitical Group.

Speaker Mudenda’s unanimous selection is a resounding endorsement of his leadership, legislative expertise, and deep experience in parliamentary legal processes. The newly formed committee, under his stewardship, has been entrusted with drafting an emergency resolution proposal for potential inclusion in the Assembly’s official agenda.

The proposed resolution seeks to address two pressing global concerns — the escalation of armed conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and parts of Africa, and the mounting impact of climate change on sustainable development. The initiative merges proposals from the Arab Group, which is focused on global conflict, and the Seychelles delegation, which highlights climate change and its implications.

The drafting committee comprises representatives from Algeria, Djibouti, Morocco, Seychelles, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe. The committee commenced its deliberations on Saturday.

In another notable development, Honourable Maureen Kademaunga, a member of the Zimbabwean delegation, was nominated to the Bureau of the IPU Committee on Science and Technology. Her term is set to begin in October 2025 at the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Africa Geopolitical Group Meeting was preceded by a session of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), chaired by the newly elected Speaker of the Parliament of Botswana, Retired Honourable Dr. Dithapelo Lefoko Keorapetse.

During his opening remarks, Speaker Keorapetse stressed the importance of enhanced regional and international cooperation through parliamentary diplomacy. He urged fellow parliamentarians to play a leading role in resolving the critical global issues threatening peace, democracy, and sustainable progress.

Zimbabwe’s active engagement and leadership roles at the IPU Assembly underscore the nation’s rising prominence in global parliamentary affairs, as evidenced by Speaker Mudenda’s appointment and Honourable Kademaunga’s recognition.
