Youth Must Be at the Center of Zimbabwe’s Development

Harare – With Zimbabwe’s youth making up the majority of the population, their role in shaping the country’s future cannot be ignored. Honorable Barbra Tinotenda Thompson is calling for greater inclusion of young people in all sectors of the economy, emphasizing that their empowerment is key to national development.

In an exclusive interview, Hon. Thompson highlighted that Zimbabwe already has various government programs designed to equip youth with skills, opportunities, and financial support. However, she believes more needs to be done to ensure these initiatives translate into real economic participation.

“Youth are the backbone of Zimbabwe’s future, yet many remain sidelined when it comes to economic decision-making and national development. It is crucial that they are fully integrated into policies that shape the nation,” she said.

She further revealed that findings from government-led youth empowerment programs are being reviewed for possible legislative action. This, she explained, could formalize support structures that ensure young people are not only beneficiaries of development but also key players in decision-making processes.

Beyond economic inclusion, Hon. Thompson also stressed the importance of humanitarian technology in addressing social and economic challenges. She believes that innovation, especially in areas such as agriculture, health, and digital finance, can help bridge gaps that have traditionally left young people behind.

“Technology is changing the world, and Zimbabwe must ensure its young people are not left behind. Investing in humanitarian technology will provide solutions to some of our biggest challenges while also creating new job opportunities,” she said.

Hon. Thompson also urged international partners, to play a more active role in supporting youth development in Zimbabwe. She pointed out that global collaboration can bring funding, expertise, and market opportunities that empower young people beyond national borders.

“The youth of Zimbabwe have the potential to contribute not just locally but globally. We need partnerships that open doors for them to excel,” she emphasized.

As Zimbabwe continues to push toward Vision 2030, Hon. Thompson’s call for youth inclusion is a timely reminder that development cannot be achieved without the active participation of young people. By ensuring they have the resources, skills, and platforms to contribute, Zimbabwe can harness its youthful energy to drive sustainable economic growth.
