Zimbabwe Seeks BRICS Membership to Boost Economic Growth

Zimbabwe is actively pursuing membership in the BRICS alliance, seeking to leverage the bloc’s economic strength to accelerate its development.

BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a significant share of global economic output and trade, making it an attractive platform for Zimbabwe’s long-term economic ambitions.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to aligning with progressive international groupings during his visit to Moscow. He emphasized that Zimbabwe’s foreign policy prioritizes economic engagement and integration with global partners who share its vision of development.

“According to our constitution, we must not only be Pan-African but also join progressive groups that are good for the socioeconomic growth of our country and for promoting peace in the world. Normally, peace is fostered through economic development,” said Professor Murwira.

As part of this strategy, Zimbabwe is strengthening ties with the Russian Federation, viewing it as a key partner in advancing technology, education, and industrial growth. Professor Murwira highlighted the importance of localized solutions, noting that partnerships with nations like Russia are essential in developing domestic industries and boosting production capacity.

“Our job as a ministry is to bridge the domestic and foreign environments through cooperation in education, technical fields, science, and technology.

This is the only way we can enhance production. And with increased production, trade opportunities naturally expand,” he explained.

Zimbabwe has already demonstrated its commitment to technological advancement through initiatives like the ZIMSAT-2 satellite, launched last year with Russian support. Such collaborations align with the country’s vision under Education 5.0, which emphasizes innovation and industrialization as pillars of economic transformation.

The pursuit of BRICS membership also aligns with the broader objectives outlined in Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy One (NDS1), where economic diplomacy and international partnerships are identified as key drivers of growth.

By positioning itself within influential global economic structures, Zimbabwe aims to enhance trade, attract investment, and solidify its place in the evolving global economy.
