Zimbabwe to Host COP15 on Wetlands Conservation

Zimbabwe is set to host the 15th Meeting of the Contracting Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Wetlands, a landmark event for the country’s environmental and tourism sectors. Scheduled to take place from July 23 to 31, 2025, at the prestigious Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls, the conference will gather global leaders, experts, and delegates to address key issues related to the protection of wetlands. The event will be held under the theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” underscoring the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems for future generations. This announcement was presented to Cabinet on February 25, 2025, by Honourable Mangaliso Ndlovu, Minister of Industry and Commerce and Acting Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife.

The successful bid to host COP15 highlights Zimbabwe’s growing influence in international environmental conservation under President Mnangagwa’s leadership. By securing the right to hold this prestigious event, Zimbabwe strengthens its position at the forefront of global discussions on environmental protection, especially in regard to wetlands, which are crucial for biodiversity and climate resilience.

Wetlands, often referred to as the “lungs” of the planet, provide essential services such as water filtration, flood control, and habitat for numerous species. The COP15 conference will serve as a key platform for nations to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and collaborate on strategies to safeguard these ecosystems. Zimbabwe’s hosting of this event provides an opportunity to showcase the country’s commitment to environmental protection and to play an active role in shaping global policies for sustainable wetlands management.

The conference will be held at the iconic Elephant Hills Hotel, located in the heart of Victoria Falls, one of Zimbabwe’s most renowned tourist destinations. This setting offers the country a unique opportunity to highlight its breathtaking natural beauty and attract global attention to its rich tourist offerings. Delegates from around the world are expected to visit Zimbabwe’s cultural and natural heritage, with Victoria Falls and other nearby natural wonders such as the Zambezi National Park and the Kasibo Wetland being key attractions.

By hosting COP15, Zimbabwe will solidify its leadership role in both regional and global environmental initiatives. The conference provides an opportunity for Zimbabwe to collaborate with other nations in areas such as climate change, sustainable development, and conservation, while engaging with experts and policymakers who are at the forefront of environmental protection.

The event also aligns with Zimbabwe’s national goals of promoting sustainable development and safeguarding its natural resources. The outcomes of COP15 will contribute to shaping Zimbabwe’s environmental policies, ensuring the continued preservation of its diverse ecosystems, including wetlands.

Preparations for the conference are progressing smoothly, with significant milestones already achieved. The conference facilities have been identified, and the COP15 website is live. Registration for foreign delegates is already underway, while local participant registration will begin in March 2025. With these preparations in place, Zimbabwe is poised to host a world-class event that will leave a lasting legacy for both the country and the global environmental community.

As the host of COP15, Zimbabwe is presented with an unparalleled opportunity to elevate its status as a global environmental leader. The conference will not only raise awareness about the significance of wetlands but also showcase Zimbabwe’s dedication to protecting its natural heritage. This landmark event promises to bring substantial environmental, economic, and diplomatic benefits to Zimbabwe, reinforcing its role in global discussions on sustainability and environmental preservation.
