The Zimbabwean government’s intensified crackdown on drug abuse has yielded significant results, with more than 50 drug dens dismantled and over 10,000 individuals arrested for drug trafficking since the start of the year. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the success of the operation, underscoring the effectiveness of the coordinated national effort.
ZRP National Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi affirmed the positive impact of the initiative in an interview with ZBC News. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Nyathi stated. “Over 10,000 arrests have been made across the country, reflecting the success of this coordinated approach to combat drug trafficking.”
The government’s strategy against drug abuse is a multi-faceted one, addressing the public health, socio-economic, and security issues that arise from widespread drug use. The focus on enforcement, combined with public awareness efforts, is proving to be effective in curbing the spread of illicit substances.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa reinforced this message during his address at the National Youth Day celebrations in Bulawayo, where he called for accountability for drug lords and highlighted the government’s commitment to fighting substance abuse.
Honourable Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Minister of Defence and Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse, also spoke at the event, urging young people to reject drugs and adopt healthier lifestyles.
The government’s focus on combating drug abuse is guided by the Zimbabwe National Drug Master Plan, a framework aimed at addressing the public health, socio-economic, and security challenges posed by drug and substance abuse. This plan continues to steer efforts to reduce drug-related harm and promote a healthier, safer Zimbabwe.
