The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Chairperson and Zimbabwean President ED Mnangagwa has called for urgent and united action to address the worsening security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Speaking at the extraordinary SADC summit in Harare, he condemned the recent attacks on SADC’s Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and UN peacekeepers in Goma, which resulted in multiple casualties.
President Mnangagwa expressed deep condolences to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and civilians caught in the conflict. He urged SADC member states to reinforce support for the regional security mission, ensuring that troops on the ground have the necessary resources to carry out their mandate effectively.
He also highlighted the growing humanitarian crisis in the region, calling for increased assistance to millions of displaced people. While emphasizing the importance of military and security efforts, he stressed that dialogue and peacebuilding must remain a priority for achieving long-term stability.
The summit is expected to establish a clear course of action to strengthen SADC’s intervention and accelerate efforts toward lasting peace in the eastern DRC.
