ZACC Denies Involvement in Truck Driver’s Death, Condemns Impersonators

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has refuted allegations circulating on social media linking it to the death of a cross-border truck driver, emphasizing its non-involvement in any anti-smuggling operations.

In a press statement issued on January 25, 2025, ZACC expressed condolences to the family of the deceased driver, who reportedly died in a head-on collision during a high-speed chase with a vehicle alleged to be part of an anti-smuggling operation. The Commission clarified that it does not engage in such activities, urging Zimbabweans to refrain from spreading false information.

“ZACC extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and categorically states that it is not part of any anti-smuggling operation,” the statement read.

The Commission also highlighted an alarming rise in individuals and organizations impersonating ZACC officials to extort bribes under false pretenses. ZACC warned the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing that such actions undermine the Commission’s mandate to promote honesty, financial discipline, and transparency.

ZACC reiterated its call for citizens to comply with tax obligations, declaring goods and paying dues at ports of entry to avoid criminal consequences. “Tax evasion is a criminal offence, and ZACC urges Zimbabweans to abide by the law,” it added.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption while condemning the misuse of its name to exploit and intimidate citizens.

It encouraged anyone encountering suspicious activities involving alleged ZACC officials to report such incidents immediately.
