MCAZ issues warning about a Fake rabies vaccine

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a warning about a counterfeit rabies vaccine currently circulating on the market.

In a circular, the authority informed the nation about the discovery and urged stakeholders to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to the counterfeit vaccine.

According to MCAZ, the counterfeit vaccine is being distributed through unofficial channels.

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has identified a falsified ABHAYRAB Rabies vaccine being circulated on the market through unauthorized sources.

“This falsified product poses a significant threat to public health due to potential lack of efficacy, harmful components, and the risk of treatment failure in preventing rabies, a fatal disease,” said Richard Rukwata, Director General of MCAZ.

Licensed traders who have obtained the vaccine have been instructed to surrender it to the authority for proper disposal.

“These quarantined units must then be submitted to the Authority for disposal. Members of the public who may have purchased the falsified vaccine are advised to return it to the pharmacy where it was obtained,” the statement added.

Amid the nation’s ongoing struggle with smuggling, the proactive measures taken by MCAZ are commendable.
