Chitungwiza – In Ward 19, where challenges such as water shortages, sewer issues, poverty, and drug abuse have weighed heavily on the community, Councillor Makweza has become a beacon of hope. Serving his third consecutive term, his efforts have brought lasting change, addressing immediate concerns while creating opportunities for growth and progress.
One of his standout achievements is the installation of four community boreholes, providing clean and reliable water to residents. These boreholes have alleviated a long-standing water crisis, ensuring that families no longer need to endure the hardships of inconsistent water supplies. Councillor Makweza has also tackled the sewer crisis, which has plagued the area for over a decade. An ongoing trench project in Unit M, extending toward Unit L, aims to resolve the persistent sewage blockages and overflow issues. This initiative promises to significantly improve sanitation and public health for the entire ward.
Speaking about the project, Mr. Robert Sibanda, a resident of Unit M, said, “The sewage problem had been unbearable for years. Councillors have brought a real solution. Finally, we can see progress, and we hope this project will end our struggles for good.” Councillor Makweza’s commitment to community development extends beyond infrastructure. He has used his plumbing company to assist with repairing household water and sewer connections, often stepping in when families are unable to afford professional services. The company(K & Cheam Plumbers) has also created employment opportunities for several youths in the ward, giving them a chance to earn a livelihood and develop valuable skills.
In addition to infrastructure projects, Mr Makweza has taken steps to support vulnerable families. He is currently paying school fees for 11 children whose families are struggling to meet the costs of education. Mrs. Tapfumanei, a beneficiary whose child has been assisted, expressed her gratitude, saying, “We were struggling to keep our child in school, but Councillor Makweza came through for us. He is truly a father figure to this community.”
To further assist those in need, Mr Makweza has engaged donors to support underprivileged families, particularly focusing on girls by providing sanitary products and other essential items. When donor support falls short, he steps in personally to ensure that these needs are met, demonstrating his deep care and responsibility as a community leader.
Councillor Makweza is also focused on empowering the youth and addressing social issues like drug abuse. Through youth development programs, he has created opportunities for skills training, education, and constructive engagement. He has also spearheaded anti-drug campaigns, working to combat substance abuse and create a safer, healthier environment for the younger generation.
“It’s all about helping the community,” Mr Makweza said during an interview. “We need to focus on practical solutions that improve people’s lives and give them hope for a better future. As leaders, it’s our duty to serve the people and make a real difference in their lives.”
