Zimbabwe’s Acting President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga has called for a commitment to a corruption-free and ethically sound nation as the true tribute to the country’s fallen heroes.
This statement came during the triple burial of National Heroes Major-General (Retired) Solomon Siziba, Cde Chenhamo Chakezha Chen Chimutengwende, and Ambassador John Shumba Mvundura at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chiwenga emphasized the importance of each generation’s role in advancing the nation. “Let us build a peaceful, economically stable, and secure Zimbabwe as a lasting legacy for future generations,” he urged, adding that the nation must continuously progress, with every generation contributing to the country’s upward trajectory.
A significant portion of his address focused on combatting corruption, which he deemed a major hindrance to Zimbabwe’s economic growth and stability. “Corruption obstructs our pursuit of sustainable development and national unity,” Dr. Chiwenga said, urging all Zimbabweans to reject selfish practices that undermine the nation’s interests.
Reflecting on Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, Dr. Chiwenga reiterated that unity and love were at the heart of the country’s fight for independence. He called on stakeholders, including the media, civil society, and political entities, to unite in building a nation based on shared values.
“We owe our sovereignty to the sacrifices of those we remember today,” he noted, stressing the importance of rejecting unethical behavior and upholding the values of unity and love, which continue to guide the nation’s path forward.
The Acting President’s remarks also included a call for national development, with an emphasis on the agricultural sector. He encouraged citizens to take advantage of the current rainfall to grow crops that would enhance food security, supporting the government’s ongoing efforts.
In heartfelt tributes, the families of the fallen heroes shared memories of their contributions. Brigadier General Mpulaeng Siziba praised his late brother’s work in advancing regional agriculture. Mr. Cleopas Nyangoni, brother of Cde Chimutengwende, highlighted his sibling’s selflessness in supporting his family and community. Ms. Jayne Mvundura, daughter of Ambassador Mvundura, reflected on her father’s discipline and contributions to education.
The solemn ceremony was attended by Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Cabinet Ministers, Service Chiefs, and other senior government officials, who stood in solidarity to honor the legacy of Zimbabwe’s national heroes.
