The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called for urgent and peaceful resolution to escalating post-election violence in Mozambique, which has claimed several lives following the Constitutional Council’s confirmation of the October 9 election results.
Expressing deep concern, Mahamat extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged calm across the nation. More than 125 people have been killed in the post election violence.
He appealed to security forces to exercise restraint in managing unrest and called on political and social actors to engage in peaceful dialogue to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.
“The priority must be dialogue to address the crisis and restore stability,” Mahamat emphasized, adding that violence threatens Mozambique’s constitutional democracy.
The AUC Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s readiness to support the Mozambican Government and work with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to facilitate a resolution to the crisis.
The unrest highlights ongoing tensions following a contentious electoral process, with observers emphasizing the urgent need for collaboration among stakeholders to restore peace in the Southern African nation.
