ZAS Redefines Innovation with Landmark Projects and a Visionary Master Plan

The Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS) is undergoing a transformation that promises to position it as a dynamic hub of innovation, economic growth, and cultural preservation.

Located in the heart of Harare’s bustling central business district, ZAS has always carried a legacy tied to Zimbabwe’s agricultural backbone. Today, under the visionary leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andrew Matibiri, the society is making strides to secure its survival while spearheading development projects that align with the country’s Vision 2030 and the broader ambition of regaining Zimbabwe’s status as the breadbasket of Africa.

ZAS has faced considerable challenges over the years, including financial constraints as a Central Business District (CBD) entity required to pay municipal rates and the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which slowed economic activity and saw partnerships falter. However, Dr. Matibiri has ensured the society remains resilient by adapting to these adversities with strategic initiatives.

One significant turning point came in 2018 when the constitution was amended to allow ZAS to explore new revenue streams. This change sparked a renewed focus on reinvesting in the society and securing its future.

A notable outcome of this shift is the partnership with Terrace Africa, a leading property developer renowned for constructing Sam Levy Village in Borrowdale. In 2022, Terrace Africa struck a deal with ZAS to develop a modern shopping mall on the society’s land. The mall, now nearing completion, is set to redefine the area’s commercial landscape, providing a state-of-the-art shopping experience and creating employment opportunities.

Beyond the shopping mall, ZAS is laying the foundation for an ambitious master plan that will elevate its status as a multi-functional space for both economic and social activities.

Dr. Matibiri hailed the master plan as a bold leap toward first-world class aspirations, setting a new standard for innovation and excellence in Zimbabwe.

“The development blueprint includes innovative facilities such as recreational parks for children, conference centers, and additional commercial spaces. These enhancements aim to position ZAS as not just a historical institution but also a forward-thinking, self-sustaining organisation capable of driving urban transformation”, he explained.

At its core, ZAS remains deeply rooted in its mission to promote agriculture. The society channels its resources toward initiatives that support agricultural development, contributing to national efforts to combat food shortages and improve food security.

By aligning its projects with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, ZAS is actively shaping the agricultural sector while supporting economic growth and modernisation.

Since its inception in 1985, ZAS has embodied the resilience and adaptability needed to thrive in an ever-changing economic landscape. Through its ongoing projects, the society is not only preserving its legacy but also creating tangible opportunities for the present and future generations. The near-complete shopping mall and increased commercial services are expected to generate significant employment, directly benefitting local communities.

Under Dr. Matibiri’s leadership, ZAS is proving that a historical institution can reinvent itself to meet modern challenges while staying true to its foundational values. With a bold vision and innovative strategies, ZAS is more than just an agricultural society—it is a beacon of hope and progress, paving the way for a future that blends tradition with transformation.
