Chamisa Faces Accountability Questions Over Land Scandal

Recent revelations from Nelson Chamisa’s testimony before the Harare City Council Commission of Inquiry have raised critical questions about his leadership during his tenure as head of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Chamisa distanced himself from the corrupt activities of CCC councillors involved in land scams, including the controversial regularization of over 300 housing cooperatives ahead of the 2023 general elections. However, his claims of powerlessness fail to absolve him of responsibility.

As the party leader at the time, Chamisa bore ultimate accountability for the actions of CCC councillors, who operated under his banner. Their involvement in dubious land deals was not isolated but appeared to be part of a calculated political strategy to curry favor with urban voters by promising access to land. While Chamisa may not have directly orchestrated the scams, his tacit endorsement of these activities, or at the very least his failure to stop them, indicates complicity in a broader scheme aimed at securing political capital.

This scandal strikes at the heart of Chamisa’s public image as a “just man” and advocate for fairness. A leader genuinely committed to justice would have taken decisive action to prevent illegal land allocations and demolitions that affected the lives of ordinary citizens. Instead, his inaction raises questions about his priorities, suggesting that political gains may have taken precedence over the well-being of the people he sought to represent.

Chamisa’s reluctance to take responsibility undermines his credibility and casts doubt on his capacity for effective leadership. The evidence presented to the Commission suggests he was aware of the councillors’ actions and failed to intervene, despite having the authority to do so. To restore his reputation, Chamisa must provide tangible proof of efforts to address corruption within his party and hold those responsible accountable.

Ultimately, this episode serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of accountability in leadership.

For Chamisa, the failure to act decisively during this critical period may leave a lasting stain on his legacy, raising legitimate concerns about his ability to lead with integrity and prioritize the interests of the people over political ambition.
