Cde Report Mphoko Honored as a National Hero

The President of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has expressed profound grief following the passing of Ambassador Report Phelekezela Mphoko, a former Vice President and veteran of Zimbabwe’s Liberation Struggle.

Announcing the tragic news, President Mnangagwa paid tribute to Cde Mphoko’s life of service and sacrifice, declaring him a National Hero in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country’s Independence and development.

Cde Mphoko, who succumbed to a long illness, was described by the President as a stalwart of the Liberation Struggle, whose military and political career was intricately tied to the birth and success of militant nationalism in Zimbabwe.

As one of the early architects and commanders of the armed Liberation Struggle, Cde Mphoko’s role was pivotal in securing the nation’s freedom from settler colonialism.

Trained in countries such as the Soviet Union, Cde Mphoko specialized in logistics, ensuring the safe transportation of arms of war to bases and the warfront. This critical role maintained the momentum of the Liberation Struggle, ultimately leading to Zimbabwe’s victory.

His versatility extended to diplomatic roles within ZAPU’s liaison department, where he collaborated with ZANU leadership in Maputo, Mozambique, to lay the groundwork for the Patriotic Front.

After Independence in 1980, Cde Mphoko’s Liberation Struggle experience prepared him for a distinguished diplomatic career. He served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to key nations, including the Russian Federation, and later ascended to the position of Vice President. President Mnangagwa described his appointment as “deserved and consistent with his sacrifice and long service to his people.” Even after leaving government, Cde Mphoko remained committed to ZANU PF, supporting the party’s endeavors, including the 2023 Harmonized Elections.

In his condolence message, President Mnangagwa extended heartfelt sympathies to the Mphoko family, particularly to Mrs. Mphoko and their children. He emphasized that the nation stands with them in this time of mourning, honoring the memory of a man whose contributions to Zimbabwe’s Independence and progress remain indelible.

The ZANU PF Politburo’s decision to confer National Hero status on Cde Mphoko reflects the country’s immense gratitude for his sacrifices and dedication.

His legacy will be celebrated and immortalized as an enduring symbol of patriotism and service.

May Cde Mphoko’s soul rest in eternal peace.
