As Mauritius prepares for its National Assembly Elections on November 10, 2024, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has deployed its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to oversee the process.
This deployment, appointed by the Chairperson of SADC’s Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, reflects SADC’s ongoing commitment to supporting democratic processes in the region.
The SEOM mission to Mauritius will follow the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, as outlined in Article 3 of the revised 2021 framework. The mission will be led by Honourable Mohammed Othman Chande, former Chief Justice of Tanzania, and coordinated by SADC Executive Secretary Mr. Elias Mpedi Magosi.
Observers from SEOM arrived in Mauritius from October 28 to 31 and will be stationed across the nation’s ten provinces to monitor the electoral process, covering pre-election, election day, and post-election periods.
The SEOM’s launch is scheduled for November 5, with a preliminary statement expected on November 12, and the mission concluding its work on November 15.
This deployment follows recent SADC missions to observe elections in Mozambique and Botswana, with both declared free and fair.
SADC has extended congratulations to Advocate Duma Gideon Boko on his recent election as Botswana’s 6th President.
Through these efforts, SADC continues to reinforce its role as a stabilizing force for democracy in the region, actively promoting transparency and accountability in member state elections.
