Secretary for Industry and Commerce Dr. T.U. Wushe Highlights Industrial Growth and Regional Trade Opportunities at BizNet B2B Linkages Workshop

In a strategic move to advance Zimbabwe’s industrial development and regional trade, Dr. T.U. Wushe, Secretary for Industry and Commerce, addressed a gathering of top business leaders at the BizNet B2B Linkages Platform Awareness Workshop held at Monomotapa Hotel on September 9, 2024. This high-level engagement, organized by the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) in partnership with the COMESA Business Council, provided a platform for discussing the digital transformation of regional trade and the opportunities it presents for businesses within the COMESA market and beyond.

Dr. Wushe emphasized the importance of the BizNet Online Market Hub in connecting local, regional, and international businesses, describing it as a critical tool for advancing regional trade and strengthening business linkages. The platform’s mission aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to tap into regional markets, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to promote intra-African trade. By facilitating digital linkages and enhancing business connectivity, BizNet offers Zimbabwean businesses a chance to compete and thrive in the international market, driving economic growth.

The Secretary further outlined the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a business environment that supports industrial growth, innovation, and economic empowerment. He highlighted the Ministry’s Zimbabwe Industrial Reconstruction and Growth Plan (ZIRGP) for 2024-2025, which aims to bridge the gap between the recently concluded Zimbabwe National Industrial Development Policy (ZNIDP) and a forthcoming long-term strategy aligned with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2). The ZIRGP will focus on critical pillars such as research and development, stakeholder engagement, and improving standards and quality in the industrial sector.

Dr. Wushe also underscored the collaborative efforts between the Ministry and the private sector to drive value chain programs in sectors like agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, and cotton-to-clothing. These initiatives are expected to enhance competitiveness and foster industrial growth, supported by various government incentives such as VAT deferment and rebates on capital equipment. The Secretary noted that such measures are crucial for attracting investment and driving industrial recovery in key sectors of the economy.

In a nod to ZNCC’s growing influence, Dr. Wushe congratulated the organization on its recent election to the COMESA Business Council Board. This achievement, he noted, not only enhances ZNCC’s role in representing Zimbabwean companies but also empowers small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to expand their footprint in regional and international markets. The focus on SMEs is pivotal, as their participation in regional trade is seen as key to unlocking economic growth and prosperity.

Dr. Wushe concluded by urging participants to fully engage with the opportunities presented by the BizNet platform, emphasizing the importance of building strong networks and partnerships that would lead to sustained economic growth and industrial development. The BizNet B2B Linkages Workshop, he remarked, marks a significant step forward in Zimbabwe’s journey toward economic transformation, driven by innovation, regional integration, and a commitment to industrial growth.
