Breaking News: 59 Dead in Nigeria After Fuel Tanker Explosion Following Collision in Niger State

In a tragic incident in central Nigeria’s Niger state, 59 people have been confirmed dead following a collision between a fuel tanker and a lorry carrying passengers and cattle. The collision, which occurred late on Saturday night, triggered a massive explosion, engulfing both vehicles and other nearby cars. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) quickly dispatched response teams to manage the situation, though the full scale of the disaster became evident as the death toll continued to rise, with the potential for further fatalities as evacuation efforts continued.

Footage from the scene shows both vehicles completely destroyed by the fire, with charred remains of the cattle also visible. Efforts by emergency rescue workers have been focused on recovering bodies and clearing the site. Ibrahim Hussaini, the spokesman for the state’s emergency unit, expressed concern that more bodies could still be found. This disaster marks one of the deadliest accidents the region has seen in recent years, with NSEMA’s Director-General Abdullahi Baba Ara highlighting the severity of the situation.

Governor Umaru Bago expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. The state government is covering the medical expenses of those injured, while funerals for many of the victims took place on Sunday. This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces, as fuel tanker accidents remain frequent, largely due to the country’s deteriorating road infrastructure. The disaster has once again brought attention to the need for urgent road safety and infrastructure improvements to prevent further tragedies.
