Zimbabwe and Malawi Strengthen Bilateral and Economic Ties

Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s recent three-day official visit to Malawi marked a significant step in deepening the economic and trade relationship between the two countries. During the visit, President Lazarus Chakwera reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to strengthening ties with Zimbabwe, emphasizing the growing partnership and its potential for regional development.

Zimbabwe and Malawi are enhancing their cooperation through a series of agreements and partnerships across various economic sectors. In June 2023, both countries signed nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as local government, police matters, gender issues, forestry management, immigration, energy, and information broadcasting. These agreements are aimed at boosting trade and economic relations, which have traditionally been underdeveloped despite significant potential. Currently, trade statistics show a balance of $32.5 million in favor of Malawi, with Zimbabwe exporting $6 million worth of goods to Malawi and importing $38.5 million.

VP Mohadi’s visit underscores the importance of these bilateral meetings in exploring new opportunities for growth and collaboration. The visit aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader goal of engaging more actively on the international stage and working towards becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030. The VP highlighted the need to identify key areas for enhanced cooperation as the two countries prepare for the 12th session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC).

The JPCC plays a crucial role in consolidating development efforts and fostering closer ties between Zimbabwe and Malawi. During the visit, discussions also included mutual support for candidates from both countries seeking positions in international organizations such as the African Union Commission (AUC). Zimbabwe is particularly focused on securing roles in various sectors including agriculture, rural development, blue economy, sustainable environment, economic development, tourism, trade, industry, mining, infrastructure, energy, health, humanitarian affairs, and social development. These areas are vital to Zimbabwe’s economic strategy and the country aims to leverage such platforms to achieve its development goals.

Overall, the strengthened bilateral relationship between Zimbabwe and Malawi promises to enhance economic growth, regional cooperation, and mutual support on the international stage
