Second Republic Launches Drought Support Plan for Rural Communities

In response to the recurring challenges of drought, the Ministry of Agriculture has introduced a comprehensive Livestock Rapid Drought Mitigation and Resilience Plan. This initiative is designed to protect the livelihoods of farmers and ensure the sustainability of the livestock sector during difficult environmental conditions.

The plan includes several key components aimed at mitigating the effects of drought and supporting rural communities. First, Drought Mitigation Centres have been established in rural wards to provide emergency feed and water supplies for livestock. These centres also offer guidance on managing drought conditions and caring for livestock, acting as hubs for information and community support.

A nationwide feed distribution program is also part of the plan, focusing on vulnerable districts and smallholder farmers. This program ensures that feed reaches those who need it most through continuous monitoring and collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders to facilitate efficient delivery.

Additionally, Ward Drought Mitigation Centres offer a range of services including livestock health support with vaccinations and disease surveillance, nutritional advice, water management, and auction services for fair livestock sales. These centres also provide training for farmers on practices that can help them better withstand drought conditions.

The plan also involves strategic partnerships with the private sector, including feed manufacturers, suppliers, and logistics providers. These collaborations are intended to enhance feed production, transportation, and distribution, and promote the development of drought-tolerant feed crops.

Village Business Units (VBUs) play a crucial role in this initiative by offering services such as fodder production, feed formulation using local resources, and establishing watering points and livestock facilities. These units empower local communities to drive drought mitigation efforts and contribute to a more resilient livestock sector.

Overall, the Livestock Rapid Drought Mitigation and Resilience Plan represents a thorough approach to addressing both immediate drought challenges and long-term sustainability. By focusing on the needs of affected areas and fostering resilience, the plan aims to ensure food security and support economic growth for rural communities in the face of ongoing environmental challenges.
