President Commits to Enhancing Military Personnel Welfare

In a speech during the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Day celebrations at Rufaro Stadium on August 14, 2024, President Emmerson Mnangagwa pledged to improve the welfare of military personnel. He acknowledged the ZDF’s significant contributions to both the community and the nation, highlighting their efforts to strengthen civil-military relations.

President Mnangagwa outlined several new initiatives aimed at supporting ZDF members. These measures reflect the Second Republic’s commitment to the well-being of the military. Recent efforts by the ZDF under the Community Assistance Programme include building clinics and classroom blocks to support local communities.

Among the key initiatives announced were housing loans and a vehicle purchase scheme, extended to all civil servants. Last week, Vice President Kembo Mohadi oversaw the commissioning of 450 vehicles intended to enhance the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s service delivery, illustrating the government’s dedication to improving public services.

The government will soon start constructing 3,000 housing units specifically for ZDF members, aligning with the Second Republic’s goal to increase affordable housing. This effort supports the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which aims to broaden access to housing across Zimbabwe.

Additionally, President Mnangagwa emphasized the need for modern facilities and adequate medical supplies in military hospitals. The construction of the Defence Forces Referral Hospital at Manyame Air Force Base is being expedited to ensure that ZDF members receive the best possible healthcare.
