Zimbabwe marked a pivotal moment in its energy sector today with the official inauguration of the Deka Upgradation Project. The ceremony, held in Hwange, was attended by key figures including the Ambassador of India to Zimbabwe, Mr. Vijay Khanduja, senior government officials, and representatives from the energy sector.
The USD 48.1 million project, funded through a collaboration between the Zimbabwean and Indian governments via the Indian Exim Bank, is designed to significantly boost the country’s electricity generation capacity. The upgraded infrastructure will contribute an additional 600 megawatts (MW) to the national grid, supporting the recently commissioned Hwange 7&8 Expansion Project.
The Minister of Energy and Power Development, who officiated the event, emphasized the strategic importance of this development in achieving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030. This vision aims to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030, with energy playing a crucial role in driving economic growth and providing essential services.
Currently, Zimbabwe’s power generation falls short of meeting peak demand, with a deficit of about 600 MW that is often covered through imports. The Deka Upgradation Project is expected to alleviate some of this pressure and help reduce reliance on external power sources.
In his address, the Minister acknowledged the vital support from the Indian government and highlighted ongoing efforts to address the country’s energy needs, including future projects to refurbish Hwange Stages I & II and expand renewable energy initiatives. The Minister also noted the importance of modernizing energy infrastructure and enhancing the power grid to meet increasing demand and improve efficiency.
The event underscored Zimbabwe’s commitment to advancing its energy sector through both traditional and renewable energy sources. With the Deka Upgradation Project now operational, the government aims to provide more stable and reliable power to support national development and improve living standards across the country.
The successful completion of this project is a testament to the strong partnership between Zimbabwe and India and marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy for all Zimbabweans.
