Michael Nees Named New Head Coach of Zimbabwe Men’s National Football Team

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) proudly announces the appointment of Michael Nees as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe Men’s National Team. The 57-year-old German will spearhead the Warriors’ campaign in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 and FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

ZIFA Chairman Lincoln Mutasa expressed optimism about Nees’s potential impact: “We are confident that Michael Nees’s appointment will usher in a new era of success for the Warriors. His extensive experience and innovative coaching approach make him the perfect choice to elevate our national team.”

Nees brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously coached the Rwandan national team and served as South Africa’s director of coaching. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his deep understanding of African football.

Zimbabwe’s quest for World Cup qualification remains a significant challenge, as the nation has yet to secure a spot in the global tournament. However, the Warriors have demonstrated resilience, qualifying for AFCON in 2004, 2006, 2017, 2019, and 2021, although they exited in the first round each time. The team has also enjoyed notable success in regional competitions, winning the COSAFA Cup a record six times.

As the Warriors prepare for a new chapter under Nees’s leadership, fans and stakeholders are hopeful for a renewed drive towards achieving football excellence on both the continental and world stages.
