MCAZ to Regulate Cosmetic Products to Protect Consumers

The proposed regulations, known as the Medicines and Allied Substances Control (Cosmetics) Regulations, will address issues such as harmful ingredients, poor product quality, and lack of traceability. MCAZ aims to ensure that cosmetic products available to Zimbabwean consumers meet stringent safety and quality standards.

Under the new framework, manufacturers, importers, and distributors of cosmetic products will be required to comply with guidelines for defining, registering, labeling, and testing their products. These measures are designed to ensure that only safe and high-quality cosmetics reach the market. Companies will need to submit detailed product information for evaluation and adhere to proper labeling and marketing practices to provide consumers with accurate information about the products they use.

MCAZ has planned several stakeholder engagement meetings to gather input from various industry participants. This collaborative approach aims to create a regulatory framework that effectively addresses the needs and concerns of both the industry and consumers. By involving stakeholders in the development of these regulations, MCAZ hopes to foster a sense of shared responsibility in ensuring product safety and quality.

The primary goal of the new regulations is to protect public health and well-being. By regulating the cosmetics sector, MCAZ intends to restore consumer confidence in the market, promote product innovation, and empower individuals to make informed choices about the products they use on their skin and bodies.

The regulations are expected to be implemented soon, subject to the necessary legislative and administrative processes. MCAZ encourages all stakeholders, including manufacturers, importers, retailers, and consumers, to stay informed and actively participate in the regulatory process. In the meantime, the public is advised to exercise caution when using cosmetic products.

The introduction of these regulations marks a significant step towards ensuring consumer protection in Zimbabwe’s cosmetics industry. By setting high standards for safety and quality, MCAZ aims to create a healthier and more trustworthy market for cosmetic products.
