Government Prioritizes MSMEs to Bolster Economic Growth

The Zimbabwean government has reiterated its commitment to nurturing a business environment conducive to the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), recognizing their pivotal role in the national economy.

The recent International Day of MSMEs was marked in Chinhoyi, offering entrepreneurs a platform to exhibit their diverse products and services.

Government efforts to support MSMEs have included providing working capital and business spaces, aiming to stimulate sector growth.

One entrepreneur expressed optimism, stating, “We are the backbone of the Zimbabwean economy. With the stability of our new currency, we have a medium that supports our transactions effectively.”

Another participant highlighted the benefits of the event, saying, “Having the opportunity to showcase our products for free allows us to grow and network, learning from others and connecting with financial institutions for project funding.”

Mr. Venancio Kurauone, Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Chamber of SMEs, underscored the sector’s importance, noting, “With a membership exceeding 4.5 million MSMEs, this sector is crucial for economic growth and job creation. However, challenges such as limited access to finance and markets need to be addressed.”

Kurauone emphasized a necessary shift in mindset, stating, “We need to move from dependency to a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-reliance. This change is essential for building resilient businesses and sustainable development.”

Dr. Kudzanai Vere, Director of Programmes at the Institute of Entrepreneurs Zimbabwe, shared plans for MSMEs masterclasses, focusing on financial literacy, budgeting, and market expansion. “Our goal is to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge to become generational business leaders,” he said.

Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, reaffirmed the government’s support, acknowledging the challenges faced by MSMEs and advocating for climate adaptation and resilience.

“MSMEs face obstacles like restricted financing, limited market access, and technical expertise shortages. Ongoing crises, from pandemics to climate change, exacerbate these issues. Entrepreneurs should focus on climate-smart solutions and renewable energy opportunities,” she advised.

Edward Kallon, United Nations Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator, pledged continued support, calling for strategic interventions to improve access to finance, promote technology, facilitate market entry, and streamline regulations.

“The UN remains committed to supporting the Zimbabwean government. Through collaborative efforts, we will help MSMEs advance towards the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure no one is left behind,” Kallon affirmed.
