
The nation mourns the loss of Brigadier General (Rtd) Romeo Daniel Mutsvunguma, who passed away on June 19, 2024, in Rusape at the age of 67. Brigadier General Mutsvunguma was a dedicated patriot and veteran of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. He served the country selflessly, earning his place at the National Heroes Acre alongside the nation’s Founding Fathers and other luminaries.

Born on March 6, 1957, in Makoni District, Manicaland Province, Mutsvunguma joined the liberation struggle in 1975, leaving St. Augustine’s Secondary School to cross into Mozambique with 17 other students. He initially performed security duties at Nyadzonia Refugee Camp and received military training at Morogoro Camp under ZIPA. His deployment included roles in Manica Province, Tangwena Sector, and various key positions such as Base Security Officer and Political Commissar.

During the liberation struggle, he reported to President Mnangagwa, then Head of Intelligence and Security, and undertook significant political re-orientation duties. His work in the News Analysis Department and the production of The Zimbabwe News Magazine was crucial in communicating the liberation cause globally.
After independence, Mutsvunguma integrated into the Zimbabwe National Army in March 1980, taking on numerous roles, including Company Commander and Director of Policy and International Affairs. His career was marked by several military courses in Zimbabwe, China, and the USA. His exemplary service earned him numerous medals, including the Liberation Medal and the Commander of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit Award.
President Mnangagwa, reflecting on Mutsvunguma’s legacy, emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and sovereignty.
