Speaker Mudenda Participates in Key SADC-PF Session in Angola

Advocate J.F.N. Mudenda, Speaker of Parliament, arrived in Luanda, Angola, on 29 June 2024 to attend the 55th Southern African Development Community – Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF). Zimbabwean Ambassador to Angola, Dr. T. Madzvamuse, welcomed him upon arrival.

Zimbabwe’s Parliament is actively involved in several international parliamentary organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Pan African Parliament (PAP), and SADC-PF.Joining Speaker Mudenda are Honourable Members Chief Chinhenzva Chigwajara, Maybe Mbowa, Mercy Mugomo, Tendai Nyabani, and Karenyi Kore. Today, on International Day of Parliamentarism, Speaker Mudenda gave an interview marking the IPU’s 135th anniversary, stressing the importance of governance based on constitutionalism, legality, and the rule of law.

He highlighted the IPU’s foundational principles of resolving conflicts through parliamentary diplomacy, dialogue, and negotiation.This anniversary also emphasizes the IPU’s efforts in advancing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. Zimbabwe supports these goals through initiatives like the Women’s Empowerment Bank and ensuring proportional representation for women in Parliament until 2033.

Youth empowerment is also a focus, with guaranteed parliamentary seats and enhanced vocational training centers.The Zimbabwean delegation is preparing for the SADC-PF Assembly by reviewing key documents, including the Executive Committee Report and the Treasurer’s Reports. They are also considering the SADC-PF Strategic Plan (2024-2028), which aims to transform the SADC-PF into a fully-fledged SADC Regional Parliament.

Speaker Mudenda will be involved in discussions on the Strategic Plan.The 55th SADC-PF Plenary Session’s official opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 2 July 2024, with Angolan Vice President, Her Excellency Eduardo Francisco da Costa, in attendance.
