MCAZ to Expand Regulatory Oversight, Boosting Local Medical Device Industry and Ensuring Public Safety

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) is set to significantly enhance its regulatory framework, expanding its oversight to include a wide range of medical devices. Previously limited to regulating condoms and gloves, MCAZ will now also focus on critical devices such as syringes, needles, and pacemakers. This proactive move aims to ensure the safety and reliability of medical devices available in the market, addressing concerns about defective products like faulty syringes and leaking urine bags.

Mr. Farai Masekela, the acting director general of MCAZ, emphasized the positive impact of this expansion. “We are committed to extending our regulatory scope to safeguard public health and ensure that all medical devices in Zimbabwe meet high-quality standards,” Masekela stated. This initiative will allow MCAZ to conduct thorough assessments and certifications of locally manufactured medical devices, fostering confidence among healthcare providers and patients.

The proposed regulations, which will undergo comprehensive stakeholder consultation and legislative review, represent a significant step towards bolstering the domestic medical device industry. By adhering to MCAZ’s rigorous standards, local manufacturers will not only improve the safety of their products but also gain potential access to international markets. “Our certification can serve as a gateway for Zimbabwean-made devices to be recognized and utilized globally, opening new export opportunities,” Masekela added.

This development marks a major advancement in Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector. By ensuring that medical devices are safe and effective, MCAZ is not only protecting public health but also supporting the growth and credibility of the local manufacturing industry.
