Zimbabwean women are making great strides by taking on leadership roles in international and regional institutions. Eunice Njovana, a well-known feminist, is running for a top position on the Committee of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The election will be held on June 14, 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The CEDAW Convention is based on three main principles: respect (equality in laws and policies), protect (non-discrimination), and fulfill (promote equality and eliminate gender discrimination). Zimbabwe has supported CEDAW since 1991 and is committed to equality. The government’s support for Njovana shows its dedication to promoting women in leadership and international roles.
Njovana has significantly advanced gender and women’s issues through her work at the Musasa Project and the United Nations Women. The Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender, and Community Development is backing her candidacy and has sent a campaign team to support her. Njovana follows leaders like Dr. Judith Kateera, who is the Executive Director of the African Development Bank and SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Corporate Affairs. The Zimbabwean government under President Mnangagwa supports women in senior and decision-making roles.
Under President Mnangagwa, more women have been appointed as ambassadors and ministers, showing a strong commitment to supporting women in influential positions. Zimbabwe’s participation in CEDAW is important. Njovana’s role will highlight the needs and priorities of women from Zimbabwe and the region on a global stage, ensuring their concerns are addressed by the committee. This position also allows her to help shape global policies affecting women’s lives.
