Distinguished Traditional Leaders, Hon. Christopher Magomo, Hon. Dingimuzi Phuti, Ms. Anne Rita Ssemboga, Mr. P. Sibanda, Mr. T. Maregere, Dr. G.K. Machengete, senior government officials, board members, political leaders, members of the media, ladies, and gentlemen:
I am honored to stand before you on this significant day as we commemorate the 2024 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, under the theme “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development.” This theme underscores the pivotal role of digital innovation in driving sustainable development and prosperity for all.
Today, May 17, marks World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrating the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on this day in 1865. We extend our warmest wishes to the ITU on its 159th anniversary. For over a century and a half, the ITU has been a driving force in shaping global telecommunications, fostering innovation, and ensuring connectivity for all.
This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in bridging the digital divide and promoting their use for social and economic development. It highlights the ITU’s role in connecting the world and ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and secure communication networks.
Various events, seminars, and workshops are being organized globally to celebrate WTISD. These activities promote the benefits of ICTs, discuss emerging trends in telecommunications and information technology, and address key challenges in the digital era. This day serves as an opportunity to emphasize the crucial role of ICT in building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
As we gather here today, we must recognize the transformative potential of digital innovation in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from tackling climate change to eradicating poverty and hunger. Innovative technologies have the power to drive significant change and create a sustainable and prosperous world.
However, we must also acknowledge the existing digital gaps that hinder innovation in many parts of the world. Inadequate investment and digital skills leave many countries struggling to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. It is imperative that we work together to bridge these divides and ensure that no one and no place is left behind in the digital revolution.
The Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services is committed to promoting digital inclusion and closing the innovation gap. Through initiatives that support digital literacy, foster innovation, and promote access to affordable and reliable digital services, we are creating an enabling environment for sustainable development through technology.
Today, I am pleased to announce the launch of a community information center in Madziva. This center will serve as Madziva’s gateway to the digital world, supporting President ED Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind. It is crucial for the local community to utilize this facility and protect it from vandalism.
As we join the ITU and its members in our journey towards prosperity through innovation, let us reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and progress. Together, we can harness the power of digital innovation to build a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
In closing, I urge all organizations and companies in Zimbabwe to contribute their unique perspectives and initiatives to drive progress in digital innovation. Let us seize this commemoration as a call to action and work together to ensure that technology serves as a force for good in our world.
