HE Dr E.D Mnangagwa begins rail expansion & rehabilitation …as progress registered in road and air travel

The Zimbabwe and Chinese Governments have announced a partnership between China Railway Int Group and the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) to refurbish and expand Zimbabwe railway network.

China Railway Int Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Group Ltd & one of the Fortune Global 500 will be partnering NRZ in the massive project. The foregoing was revealed during a meeting, yesterday between Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Prof Mthuli Ncube, and Chairperson of the China Railway International Group Prof. Bi Yanchun and his team.

Having recorded massive infrastructure development in road and air travel rehabilitation the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa has shifted focus to rail expansion and rehabilitation.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is proving beyond any doubt that he is a doyen of infrastructure development ever since he ascended to power in 2017.

He is a living embodiment of the truth that ‘Nyika Inovakwa neVene Vayo’.

The focus on refurbishing and expanding Zimbabwe’s railway network is the tonic required to accelerate the achievement of an Upper Middle Income Economy Status by 2030.

Already, the New Dispensation has embarked on an aggressive road rehabilitation programme, as well as the expansion and refurbishment of airports in recognition of the key role that transport in economic development.

The concentration has been on road and air travel, but now with the roll out of the rail project, transport costs which play a key role in the distribution and supply chain would be significantly reduced, while the number of haulage trucks, which damage road infrastructure would be significantly reduced.

The continuing partnership between Harare and Beijing is testament to the strong ties between the two countries. The mutual cooperation between the two longtime allies has seen the Chinese partnering Zimbabwe in the construction of Hwange 7 and 8, Kariba South expansion and the Gwai-Shangani Lake, among others.

China is an all-weather friend indeed, unlike some western countries that pretend to partner Zimbabwe, yet they would be funnelling regime change money to civil society, while maintaining the illegal sanctions regime.

China focuses on mutually beneficial economic co-operation as opposed to aggressive and adversarial relations.
